The scientist who discovered the skull in a muddy pit during a dig around the University of York, Heslington, England, said he was surprised to find brain tissue was stored in the skull.

Tests prove that the brain of a man who lived in an age of iron and killed by horrible, 2,500 years ago. But scientists are puzzled how brain networks that normally decay over the years has managed to survive in such a long period of time.

"The existence of the brain that are buried for so long is very strange and rare," said Sonia O'Connor, archaeologist at the University of Bradford.

"The brain is a very interesting object because it preserved well. It became the oldest brain ever recorded in British history and became one of the world's oldest brain, "says O'Connor.

Experts say the brain is thought to belong to men aged 26-45 who died by hanging his head cut off and buried separately with his body.

Scientists are now investigating how proteins and lipids found in the brain that are stored and how your man died and was buried.

"This is the most complete investigation to truly understand how the brain can survive thousands of years, whereas other soft tissues have decayed," says O'Connor again.
